God Winks

April 3, 2021 By Maria

I frequently use the term “God wink” on the Breadcrumb Trail. I first heard the term from my sister-in-law.  A wink from God is a confirmation that God hears your prayer, knows your needs and understands your feelings. He’s letting you know He is always with you even though you may not be aware of His presence at that precise moment.

I instantly loved this term because it’s something I’ve experienced countless times in my life, but I never had a name for it.

God winks come in many different shapes and sizes. This Easter weekend I wanted to share how you can be part of the winks God so beautifully orchestrates.

OBEDIENCE.

You participate in God’s winks through obedience. When you feel “called to do something” and make the decision to follow through on that calling, regardless how large or small the task is, you are being obedient.

Let me give you an example from this past week. Last Monday my family and I buried my Grandpa. My Dad asked me if I’d like to say something at the service. At the time, I wasn’t sure if there would be a Scripture reading, so I planned to read Psalm 23 in addition to sharing my favorite memories and the love I held for my Grandpa.

Long story short, there was a prayer service so I omitted reading the Psalm. Later on that day, after Grandpa was laid to rest, I was having a conversation with my Mom and questioning whether or not Grandpa made God’s cut. He was a believer but I wasn’t sure of his relationship with Jesus. Grandpa’s salvation was something I’d spent a lot of time in prayer about.

At that exact moment I received a text message from a dear friend.

She wrote it had been on her heart for a very long time to send out a “daily words of encouragement” message. Her first message read,

“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside still waters, He restores my soul.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me. Your rod and staff comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all of the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

 ~ Pslam 23

After Psalm 23 she wrote a beautiful devotion and shared words of encouragement. Every day since then, I have received her daily message and each day has expanded on Psalm 23.

I was able to share with her that I feel God winked at me through her words. We talked though how she had felt the calling to do this for a long time, and finally took action. She felt God was calling her to do this and she was being obedient.

Her obedience is touching the lives of others and helping to facilitate God’s winks.

What is God trying to facilitate through YOU?

I’ve learned it’s OK not to fully understand what you’re being called to do.

Do it anyway.

Make the call. Write the letter. Fill out the volunteer paperwork. Apply for the job. Give the compliment.

Take action on the things you feel called to do.

For me, it’s writing the Breadcrumb Trail. Some weeks feel more like a task to check off a list instead of the heartfelt intention God has placed on my heart, but I have chosen to obey regardless. Every time I need it, He sends me the wink I need to keep going. That’s when I look up to the heavens, shake my head, smile and think, “well played, my friend, well played.”

The biggest display of obedience was Jesus dying on the cross for us. He asked His Father in the Garden of Gethsemane if He could be spared. Learning that it was His Father’s will and not His own, He was obedient and His obedience resulted in the reason we celebrate Easter.
