More of Your Questions Answered!

October 16, 2021 By Maria

Project Breadcrumb Trail kicked off year two with the series “Man Cannot Live on Bread Alone.” I was sent several messages and questions throughout the series. As a few more questions have trickled in, I will share them along with my responses in an extra addition post today!

Q) What are some sweet treats you recommend?

A) It’s always challenging to find a balance between calorie and macro-friendly treats and clean ingredients. While the ingredient list is a little longer than I’d like it to be, I love the Alani Nu protein bars and shakes. They taste more like a treat than a mid day protein boost.

Flavors include:

  • Chocolate Cake 🤤
  • Munchies (sweet and salty goodness) 🥨 🍯
  • Peanut Butter Cup 🥜
  • Confetti Cake 🧁

Most bars include about 20 grams of protein! You can find these online or at Vitamin Shoppe, GNC or Target.

In addition to Alani Nu bars and shakes, you can often find a pint of Halo Top ice cream in my freezer. Halo Top can be found in the ice cream section at your local grocery store or even Walmart. I have yet to find a flavor I don’t like!

1 serving (either 1/2 cup or 1/3 pint) usually has 7 grams of protein and minimal fat. The entire pint is generally less than 300 calories, which is much less than say, Ben & Jerry’s!

Shameless Plug: If you Back the Blue, steer clear from Ben and Jerry’s. They’ve donated a lot of money to defund the police 👎

Last but not least, I have an incredibly tasty bedtime treat that I enjoy in the fall and winter. Think of a warm, frothy milkshake, because that’s exactly what it tastes like! You can find the receipt in the post Silent Nights.

Q) Can you recommend any food hacks to save calories and not feel like you’re missing out?

A) Nonfat Greek Yogurt.

I use this in place of sour cream and as a dipping sauce.

Fun Fact: I’ve put this out with tacos and no one has ever noticed that it’s not sour cream.

Try it with tacos, baked potatoes, soups and with any other food where you would add sour cream.

When using it for a dipping sauce, I love adding hot sauce to it or a variety of different seasoning, depending on what I’m in the mood for. Lemon zest, honey garlic, cayenne pepper and steak seasoning are some of my favorites.

Speaking of seasoning, I highly recommend a brand called Flavor God.

It’s available online and though it is a little pricey, the ingredients are clean and sexy and contains little to no calories.

Flavors range from chocolate donut to pizza, to lemon and garlic to buttery cinnamon roll, plus many more!

You can add amazing flavor to your coffee, veggies, chicken, meat and anything else your heart desires.

Q) What protein powder do you recommend?

A) Ascent

My husband and I started using this brand because it contains cleaner ingredients than our previous brand (Optimum Nutrition).

We use the vanilla flavor during and after workouts and the chocolate Casein at bedtime.

You’ll notice protein will be labeled Isolate or Casein.

  • Isolate = Fast digesting. Good for post workouts.
  • Casein = Slow digesting. Good in the evening for overnight digestion or if you have to go longer than you’d like without an actual meal.

If dairy isn’t your thing, Ascent also makes a plant based protein. It includes organic:

  • Pea protein 🙂
  • Sunflower protein 🌻
  • Pumpkin protein🎃

In part 1 of Man Cannot Live on Bread Alone we learned most Americans do not get enough protein. Though real food is your best source, protein shakes are a great supplement.

There you have it folks! If questions continue to come in, I will share my responses.

Feel free to drop a question or let me know what you’re looking forward to in future posts!
